This prompt (see image through link below) comes up when I try to open a student's sound link:

Her links do not direct me to Pantherfile. Why is this?

Lilly,
This student's work is in .cda format, which stands for "Compact Disc Audio." Apparently this is a Windows issue where the .cda file (44k) simply refers to the audio file but doesn't contain any audio itself. The student may have to rip the CD (using Nero or MusicMatch Jukebox, or something like that) to generate audio copies of the original files from the CD.
Here is more info: http://www.techsupportalert.com/how_to_work_with_audio_cd_cda_files.htm
Best,
G. |

Hi Lilly. Good detective work. I suspect because she has used a "free" image/sound hosting service rather than her Pantherfile account. Not only will the links in her artwork/blogs remain active longer if she uses Pantherfile, she'll have access to the files in the future should the hosting service change policies or go under. Managing one's own media is an important skill to begin learning. UWM's Pantherfile hosting is not perfect, but its quite good and the practices are quite comparable to those one will use in the commercial context after graduation. Rob D. |
