Earlier in the semester I seem to remember some other student asking how to do smooth pans between the left and right track in Audacity. Well, never fear, nameless student, I have uncovered this elusive secret. Actually, not so much a secret as a pretty easy process. That is pretty self explanatory. Pretty much.

What you do is go to the track drop down menu (it looks like a little black upside down triangle, a bit above the "Solo" button), and then look towards the bottom where it says "Split Stereo Track". Click that, and your stereo track will split into two separate tracks, one for the left channel and one in the right.

Then select the envelope tool (right underneath "Edit", and next to the Selection and Draw tools), and you can double click wherever you want to mess with the levels of the new, separate tracks. Experiment with that for a while, and you'll be able to do pans, sharp cuts, or whatever your pretty little nameless head desires.

If it's needed, I can post an image/video tutorial, but it's pretty self explanatory, so I doubt I'll need to. Besides, I've got to do some serious editing to crank out by class tomorrow. Or maybe I'll just go to sleep, it's like 5:30 in the AM, dude. Gnarly.

Jon,

Great troubleshooting, and thanks for taking the time to post and share.

No problem, Glenn, a huge part of my final project was going to be panning audio between channels and I needed to find some way to do it.

Hi Jonathan--
I like your experiment. To explore the range of possible effects and choose the ones to build upon, one could try using random and auto panning plugs on duplicated or different tracks in Audacity. Adding some digital delay (fixed or varying) to some of the tracks can create timing differences that play off of human ears spacing in affecting the stereo image.

Most of these effect plugs work on mono tracks and stereo pairs. Most "VST" type plugs will work in Audacity. Here's a site has most of the current plugs out there- many are free: http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php I seem to recall that MDA has a free one called, "Round Pan," but there are several,.. Rob D.
