Vista is not supported, and will not be for a long time. There is a thread from one user that claims he got it running. Search, and you may find it. But, you're on your own.
that thread that i found is--
If you right click on Launch.exe and select to run it in XP compatability mode, it works. You also have to run AvidFree DV in XP compatability mode. Seems to work fine once you've done that, though.
problem is is that when i right click on launch.exe i do not get the option to run it in xp compatability mode.
i was able to install it but then when i tried to start it and error came up. EXCEPTION: ADM_DSOUND_MIXER_OPEN_ERROR
guessing this has something to do with my sound card. but if it won't even open up for me to change the sound issues i'm not sure how to tackel this problem.
when looking more into sound card issues with aviddvfree many sound cards are not compadible with aviddvfree anyway.
here's the link to the posts:

I contacted, Mark, the the PSOA computer specialist and he reports that UWM will not be changing to VISTA for a good while. I&MT has just begun to test for compatibility issues.
I suggest _not_ upgrading to Vista until you are certain other users are successfully using the key software applications you need on a platform similar to yours. As Brooke successfully queried on the Avid site, software user groups are a good place to determine this.
I looked into booting on an external hard drive with XP installed on it and as best as I can tell, its much more involved to do this with XP than Mac OS X.
As per the "EXCEPTION: ADM_DSOUND_MIXER_OPEN_ERROR," the below work-around from the Avid Users Forum has been reported to work by a number of students:
http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums/post/30898.aspx
| Quote: | Go into Start>control panel>Sounds> Speech/Voice. Change the audio input settings from one of the devices to the internal sound device (such as Real Tek AC), or to your external sound card.
Remove any peripheral USB devices (such as webcams, MIDI to USB controllers, etc.)
If you are using an external soundcard, you might try removing it from the system. Many third party audio host devices are not supported by Avid. The only two soundcards officially qualified by Avid are the Soundblaster and the iMic.
If you still have the error message, you might have to invest in an approved sound card.
I'm lucky, my RealTek 97 works fine, but I can appreciate this must be very frustrating. Stick with it and good luck! |
There's a pretty good summary of the sound card suggestions in our forum:

Very simple solution:
Double click 'Computer' Icon on desktop
Open Program Files
Find the Avid Folder, double click to open
Find the Avid.exe extension
Right click on icon and choose 'properties' at the bottom
Click the 'compatibilities' tab
check box "Run this program in compatability mode for:"
Choose Windows XP (service pack 2) |
