My family and I are fans of old castles, so of course we enjoyed seeing the usual ones while vacationing last month in Southwest Ireland--Blarney and Ross.
However, we also happened upon several splendid but unrestored castles. One in particular Kanturk Castle, though but a roofless, hollow shell, casts an eerie aura as you walk within its still solid walls, now home to dozens of rooks, daws, and crows. We spent a good hour there exploring its grounds, reading the informative signs, and imagining what Edgar Allen Poe would have done with such a setting.
Best of all, this place has no charge.
