Naruto Text Tutorial

For this tutorial, I'll show you how to make text like shown in the show Naruto. The only thing that you will need to do this tutorial is the font Ninja Naruto, which can be found at dafont.com.
I will be using this picture as a reference for this tutorial.

1) Open a new document, roughly 900x250 in dimensions with a dark gray or black background.

2) Using the Ninja Naruto font, type out any word in the window. For this tutorial, I used Nightfirecat, but you can use anything. It doesn't matter what color the word is in.

3) Resaterize the text by going to Layer>Resaterize>Type, or right clicking on the text and selecting 'Resaterize Type'.

4) This step is the most difficult--you need to use the polygonal lasso tool and/or the pen tool and cut out each letter of your word, then hit 'ctrl+c', then 'ctrl+v', which will copy the selected letter into a new layer. Repeat this step for each letter, then delete the layer containing the whole word. Use your best judgement on how letters should look if they overlap, like the I, the R, and the E in Nightfirecat.

5) Double click the first letter in your word to open the blending options.

6) Apply the following settings to this letter.

Now we have our letter style.

7) Now we need to set this style to every letter. Right click the letter with the style on it (in my case, the 'N'), and select 'Copy Layer Style'.

Now, right click on each of the other layers and select 'Paste Layer Style'.

8) Now we've got our text, but if you look at the example, the text has two strokes! The important thing is that the second stroke goes around ALL of the letters, meaning that they're all grouped together. So, we need to merge all the layers. First, right click the top layer (the 'N'), and click 'Create Layers'.

Now you should have this.

Now, merge the layers by clicking on the Gradient Fill layer, and hitting 'ctrl+e' once. This merges the gradient layer and the N layer. Now, repeat this, after selecting the Centered Stroke layer, and hitting 'ctrl+e' once. Now you should have this:

Repeat these steps until all of your letters are regular layers without any effects on them, like shown below.

9) Now, highlight the top layer of your letters (my 'N'), and hit 'ctrl+e' until you have only one layer containing your entire word.

10) Now that you have just your word, open up the blending options again, and check drop shadow and stroke with these values.

Now you should have this:

11) Now it's looking pretty good.. But something's still missing--the outer glow. Click on your text layer and hit 'Create Layers'. Ignore the warning box that says that some aspects of the Effects can't be produced, and hit Ok.

Now it doesn't matter in what order you merge these 3 layers that are the result of this, but now click on either the word itself or the outer stroke and hit 'ctrl+e' to merge it with the layer underneath, and repeat this with the layer that's on top that's left. You should end up with this:

Make sure that you only have one layer without any layer effects left in your layers (excluding background and copies).

12) Now, open up blending options for a last time and check outer glow and set it to these settings.

Now you're done!

For the final version, I simply inserted a good picture of naruto (albeit low resolution), and put it in the right place.

Of course, there's still that spiral that's behind the text that isn't included in this tutorial... You can download a .psd of the spiral here, and simply copy the outer glow layer style from the final version of the text and copy it to the spiral, and you'll have that done.

That's it. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
