|
|
My son bought a 5.0 car and it has a head that is leaking water into the exhaust port. The heads are aftermarket cast iron Windsor Jrs. Apparently an old owner got gready with a die grinder and then repaired with JB weld or something similar. We got the engine tore down to the head and it will come off tomorrow.
Has anyone repaired a cast iron head and with what product?

Yikes.
I have heard of guys repairing overzealous porting... but you have to take a fair bit of material out to get into the water jacket!
let me know if you want to buy a really great set of world JR's... after this race year
Good luck. _________________

Roger,
I did some quick research on cast iron repairs. Looks like there are a few different opinions, some people can get away with very soft filler rods, slow cooling etc. Other's say don't touch it with an electric welder.
The only experience I have with welded cast iron is the carrier in my old samurai. We preheated the carrier with a tiger torch, welded up the sidegears and spiders, then places it in a mason brick enclosure (just big enough to fit the part in). We let it slow cool for about 4 hours, then slammed it back in the rear end. Never had any problems with cracking (used run of the mill MIG wire).
Might be tricky to repair a thinner section though, as it would heat and cool too quickly most likely causing a crack. _________________ 87 Mustang GT

The head is bad as it is not a porting job gone bad. Looks like some tried to remove the head with the front /lower bolt in place. Cracked from sparkplug hole to front of head. It has been brazed and then epoxyed.
We need a Windsor Jr head or another set of heads complete. Any leads would be helpful.

that sucks.
I wouldnt trust a fix on that, even if its possible... tourqing would probably re-break it.
Check your PM...
